How to Measure Yourself for a Quinceañera Dress
Follow these 8 steps for a perfect fit — and order with confidence online
Shopping online? Accurate measurements are the key to getting a gown that fits beautifully when it arrives — no alterations needed.
Before you start, make sure you have everything ready so measurements go smoothly:
- A soft, flexible measuring tape — not a metal ruler
- A full-length mirror so you can see what you are doing
- A notepad and pen to write each measurement down immediately
- A friend or family member to help — two sets of hands make it much more accurate
Wear approximately the same undergarments you plan to wear on your Quinceañera day. Do not wear hoodies, belts, or bulky pants — these will throw off your measurements.
- Your Quinceañera bra or strapless bra
- Any shapewear, corset, or petticoat you plan to wear under the dress
💡 Tip: Different clothing layers can change your measurements by 1–2 inches — this step really matters when ordering online!
Where: Around the fullest part of your chest (across the nipple line).
How: Keep the tape parallel to the ground — snug but not squeezing, and not sagging.
Record as: Bust — ___ inches / cm
💡 Tip: Breathe normally and do not hold your breath while measuring.
Where: The narrowest part of your torso — usually 1 to 2 inches above your belly button.
How: Wrap the tape snugly around your natural waistline. Do not suck in your stomach!
Record as: Waist — ___ inches / cm
💡 Tip: Bend to the side — the crease that forms is your natural waist.
Where: The fullest part of your hips and seat — usually 7 to 9 inches below your natural waist.
How: Keep the tape parallel to the floor. Stand with feet together for accuracy.
Record as: Hips — ___ inches / cm
💡 Tip: A helper makes this step much easier — have them hold the tape while you read the number.
Keep in mind: This measurement is not required for 90% of dresses, but is very helpful for taller girls.
Where: From the hollow at the base of your throat (the small indent between your collarbones) straight down to where you want the hem to fall.
How: Stand straight wearing the heels you plan to use. Measure from the hollow to the floor or desired hem length.
Record as: Hollow-to-hem — ___ inches / cm
💡 Tip: Always measure in the shoes you will wear — heels can add 2–4 inches to the required length.
Before writing your final numbers, take each measurement twice:
- If both numbers match — you are good to go ✅
- If they differ by more than ½ inch — measure a third time and use the middle number
Have your helper re-measure your bust, waist, and hips for a second opinion. Even a small error can mean a dress that does not fit correctly when it arrives.
💡 Tip: When between two sizes always size up — it is much easier to take a dress in than to let it out.
Write all measurements in one place and keep them handy for when you order:
- 📝 Write them in a notepad or your Quinceañera planning folder
- 📸 Take a photo of your written measurements on your phone
- 📧 Email them to yourself so you always have a digital copy
- 🛍️ Compare your measurements against the size chart on each product page before adding to cart
💡 Tip: Re-measure 4–6 weeks before your event — especially if you have been exercising or have had a growth spurt.
